Sam Caruso, Jr. has been in Slidell since the young age of eight. He became politically active at 10, and by age 18 he was running campaigns, mostly for his own father, who served as Mayor from 1985-2002. Sam the Mayor kicked off the Olde Towne revitalization, and created the first Main Street program back in the late 1980s. Sam, Jr. has served in some capacity with Main Street or the Historical Preservation Commission, where is currently the Chairman, since the mid 1990s. Sam and his wife have three children that they are raising right here in Olde Towne. They love living in the residential section of Olde Towne, knowing that the entire family can ride bikes or walk to every festival, concert, restaurant and park in the neighborhood.
In addition to his work with us in Olde Towne, Sam serves as the Director of Business Development for Slidell Memorial Hospital, where he has been for over 23 years. The best part of his job at SMH is overseeing all of the community related activities the hospital does. He is a trumpet player, and has even been spotted playing gigs right here in Olde Towne from time to time. He serves as the President of the Pope John Paul II High School Advisory Board, and sits on the Board of Directors of Heritage Bank. He was Chairman of the East St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce in 2011, where he had served three terms on the board. Sam also served as Chairman of the Mayor’s Transportation Task Force, where he and a host of other leaders worked on long term goals for enhancing the overall transportation network throughout Slidell and the surrounding area. He is currently on the advisory board for Safe Haven. He is a graduate of Leadership Slidell Class of 2001 (now called Leadership Northshore), and is a 2019 graduate of Leadership Louisiana.
Sam says his parents always taught him that whatever place he was, he had a responsibility to leave it better than when he arrived. He lives by that motto today, and strives to improve the entire community of Slidell through his many volunteer activities.
